Luxury Tented Safari Chalets at Wilpattu

To Arrange Safaris At Wilpattu

Thamaravila teams up with only the best and most experienced jeep safari operators at Wilpattu National Park.

Safaris can be arranged in the mornings at 5:45 am or in the early afternoon at 2:45 pm. After entering the park gates a drive of around 10 km is required through thick jungle until the villus (waterholes) are reached.

Unlike other national parks in Sri Lanka, it is also possible and rewarding to spend a whole day inside Wilpattu National Park. This will allow guests to reach the shoreline of Wilpattu at Thambapanni, a unique area of ‘red sand’ where the first settlers to the island are thought to have landed 2000 years ago. You can even have a great sea bath on a shallow beach nearby!

There are several picnic areas inside the park near several waterholes and next to the beach at Kudremalai Point where it is possible to get out of vehicles in safety and enjoy a packed lunch.

Specialist Wildlife Programs

We can arrange exclusive tailor made safari programs featuring skilled naturalists and local trackers that have specialist knowledge of the wildlife on offer at Wilpattu.

Wildlife Photography
The ecology of Wilpattu makes for great photography. Those with a keen interest in photography should spend at least one morning or evening parked by a waterhole, letting the jungle come to them, as the animals become comfortable in their presence.

Leopard Watching Safaris
With a 50% chance of spotting a Leopard and the absence of other vehicles, Wilpattu is undoubtedly the best location in Sri Lanka for professional Leopard photography. All of the Leopard shots from Disney’s Monkey Kingdom (2015) were filmed at this reserve.

Birdwatching Trips
The park is a major sight of interest for birders, with the 50 villus supporting a variety of resident and migratory waterfowl.

The thick jungles also contain a surprisingly large number of endemic birds. These include Sri Lanka Jungle Fowl, Brown-capped Babbler, Sri Lankan Woodshrike and Black-Capped Bulbul.

The Ancient Ruins Of Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura was one of the fabled cities of the East whose fame spread throughout the centuries until it was buried by the jungle tide. Ruins including several huge stupas that lie scattered over a vast area. It was the capital city of the island from 500 BC until 1073 AD. It is only 30 minutes away so is easily visited from Thamaravila.

The Jethavamaramaya Stupa at Anuradhapura was the tallest structure of the Ancient World after the Third Pyramid at Giza.

Nearby is the Sri Maha Bodhi Tree- planted from a sapling of the tree under which the Buddha attained ‘Nirvana’- the oldest historically documented tree in existence.

The huge extent of monasteries and temples include the northern ruins that contain the masterful Samadhi Buddha Statue and the Twin Bathing Ponds. The Thuparamaya is the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka and contains the collar-bone of the Buddha.

The Isurumuniya Temple has some beautiful stone carvings, some of which are now displayed in the adjoining museum.
